October learning and fun!!
Hi all! The last few weeks have been exciting as we are waiting for Halloween and celebrating Fall.
All of the children have been eager to participate in creating Spooky houses. To make these we practice using prepositions while placing the windows, doors, and stickers on the houses. Making ghost hands was fun and we used adjectives to describe the way the paint felt on our hands . (language, creativity, fine motor skills, reading readiness, holidays/culture)
We talked about bats! we learned they are nocturnal, they feed their babies milk, and they have thumbs to hang upside down! We made some bats with glitter glue. (science, art, fine motor, language)
We read Halloween poems where we filled in missing rhyming words (language)
Lots of painting projects!
The children had a great time using their whole bodies to explore plunger painting using black and orange paint. We had large trays of paint to dip plungers in then slam against paper on the ground. We talked about the circle prints they made(large motor development, small motor development, language, math/shapes, cause and affect-science, sensory)
We used liquid water color paint and eye droppers to decorate tissue paper fall leaves. This was the biggest hit with the children. It took a lot of concentration for them to figure out how to squeeze to suck up paint, let go, then squeeze to drop paint onto the paper. They all painted around a table together talking about the colors they were using and all of the water they were squeezing. (language, cognitive development, sequencing, science, fine motor development, social development, sensory development, creativity)
We had a great time making our own English muffin pizza as well as our own pizza dough. we used circle olives and circle pepperoni to top them. We even made graham cracker pizzas using yogurt and bananas. We talked about how these pizzas were not round but square. (science, math, sensory development, social development, language, fine motor development)
We read a book about things a boy sees that are round. We discussed the words round, around, circle , sphere, We looked for circles in our books, yard, and our house all month.
We drew pumpkins by trying to draw a circle shape with lines down the middle and a line for the stem. (math, science, reading readiness, fine motor, language)
We talked about the letter P this month. We had letter p lunches with peanut butter, pineapple, and pickles. We played with puffs. We had PURPLE corn in the sensory bin. We did the letter p in sign language and made the sound. We decorated a purple P with pumpkins.(language, fine motor, listening, reading readiness, math, cognitive development)
Thanks to all of you who came to our fun Family field trip to the pumpkin Patch- it was great to see all of the children having fun with their families.
We have had fun counting and memory singing 5 little pumpkins.( language, music, singing, math, memory, dramatic play)
We have been using creative thinking and language when singing Witches brew. The children think of spooky and yucky things they want to add to the witches brew.(music, creativity, cognitive development, confidence building)
We have been using creative movement and dramatic arts to act out different Halloween characters while singing" If you are spooky and you know it". (dramatic play, music, singing, creative development, cognitive skills)
We danced while being recorded to freeze dance, wiggle wobble and more. (music and movement, listening, creativity, cognitive development, confidence building)
We sang "leaves are falling" and talked about how leaves loose their color because there is less sun and they make less chlorophyll.( science, seasons, music and movement, language)
We made poems about fall leaves by taking turns completing the sentence at circle time. ( language, cognitive development, confidence building)
DID YOU KNOW???
All of the activities we do are the first steps in learning to read, write, sit, follow directions, think on our own, and get along with others? All of these skills will be important when we go to kindergarten. These skills are the building blocks to future learning.
And they think they are just playing!!
